It was necessary to situate their thoughts in their historical contexts. The aim was to find out why they propounded their respective theories. All philosophies are products of individual philosophers belonging to a particular class of a particular society at a particular time. Many cross-currents - social, cultural, economic and political - impinge upon the thoughts of philosophers. The result is like poetry. It is an enormous task to decipher why a philosopher proposes a particular hypothesis. Bhattacharya, AsokeAsoke Bhattacharya (born 1950) was a professor of Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India. He is now the Director of the Bangladesh Institute of Lifelong Learning, Dhaka. He was a visiting professor of the erstwhile Danish Pedagogic University, Copenhagen, presently known as the School of Education, University of Aarhus, Denmark.
