In transplanted paddy growing areas of south Gujarat, generally local variety of Indian bean is grown during rabi season on residual moisture. However, productivity of this crop is very poor i.e., around 400-500 kg/ha. For enhancing the productivity of Indian bean through varietal improvement, Navsari Agricultural University has recently released new variety viz; GNIB-21. Though, this variety has high productivity, yet its package of practices is to be developed. Developing appropriate package of practices will enable to realize full production potential of this variety. By achieving higher productivity through suitable agronomic practices, Indian bean will attract more farmer for its cultivation during rabi season. As a result, more area will come under paddy-Indian bean sequence which will have beneficial effect on soil health particularly on organic carbon status i.e. carbon sequestration. Similarly, bringing more area under Indian bean during rabi season will also help in mitigating the pulses shortage arises due to poor production of kharif pulses caused by prevalence of abberant weather condition during monsoon.
