This book describes the presidential aspirations of James G. Blaine in the elections of 1876, 1880, 1884, 1888, and 1892. It discusses at length his convention loss in 1876 and his loss of the presidential election to Grover Cleveland in 1884. In losing, Blaine received a greater percentage of the popular vote than did eight candidates who won the presidency. The Appendix contains scores of hard-to-find letters, charts, tables, and telegrams, including the text of all the famous Mulligan letters and other letters used by Blaine in his defense before the House of Representatives.

Rezension zu „James Gillespie Blaine and the Presidency “
Tutorow's masterful weaving of his short account of Blaine's presidential aspirations around primary documents and his exhaustive appendices which place at the disposal of scholars a wide variety of documents not easily located even by specialists are, indeed, a service to the craft of history. His work opens many doors to further research in a period of American history too often shrugged off as the Gilded Age, a term that is intended to explain considerably more than it does. (Gerald Gillespie, Stanford University) Tutorow's work, based on his use of scores of major and largely neglected documents, will help restore Blaine to his rightful place among America's greatest statesmen... Historians and political scientists alike will profit from Tutorow's collection of documents... key documents, tables, and charts are included in eighteen appendices. This book ... is a significant contribution to the political and biographical literature of late-nineteenth century America. (Wyn Wachhorst) Tutorow places Blaine in the center of the political circus as none of Blaine's previous biographers quite succeeded in doing. Political scientists will be as fascinated as historians not by what the political legends tell us but by what accurate primary sources now reveal... Tutorow's erudition has done the rare thing and provided the historical profession with a fresh methodological blueprint. (Ted C. Hinckley, San Jose State University)
