This book addresses the challenging problem of employing aerial robots to transport and manipulate loads safely and efficiently, discussing in detail the design and derivation of control algorithms based on adaptive control, optimal control and reinforcement learning.
Unmanned aerial vehicles are increasingly being used to perform complex functions or to assist humans in dangerous missions in dynamic environments. Other possible applications include search and rescue, disaster relief operations, environmental monitoring, wireless surveillance networks, and cooperative manipulation. Creating these types of autonomous aerial vehicles places severe demands on the design of control schemes that can adapt to different scenarios and possible changes in vehicle dynamics. As such, aerial load manipulation and transportation is extremely important in emergency rescue missions as well as for military and industrial purposes.
This book provides insights into the problems that can arise in aerial load transportation and suggests control systems techniques to solve them. It particularly focuses is on modeling the aerial load transportation system, as well as stability and robustness analysis. It also describes an experimental testbed and controller implementation.

Autoren-Porträt von Rafael Fierro, Patricio Cruz, Ivana Palunko
Dr. Ivana Palunko is a postdoctoral researcher in the Research Centre for Advanced Cooperative Systems (ACROSS) at the Department of Control and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb. She graduated from FER with a Master's degree (Dipl.-Ing.) in Electrical Engineering in 2007, majoring in Control Systems. Her Master's thesis investigated modelling and controller design for small scale helicopters. In July 2006 she received a "Rector Award" granted by the president of the University of Zagreb, for the best student research project in the field of Electrical Engineering for the 2005/06 academic year. After graduation, from November 2007 to July 2008 she worked as a research assistant at UNIZG - FER, Department of Electric Machines, Drives and Automation, Laboratory for Interactive Simulation Systems as a part of a project supervised by Prof. Kresimir ?osi?. In June 2008 she was one of the managers of Croatian Chamber of Economy at international exhibition EUROSATORY. In fall 2008 she was awarded a full scholarship for a graduate program at University of New Mexico, and enrolled in a full PhD program in Control Systems. In April 2009 she was awarded with the "Science Award" granted by the The National Foundation for Science, Higher Education and Technological Development of the Republic of Croatia, as the best young scientist in technical and biotechnical area for 2008/09. During her PhD program she worked as a research assistant at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of New Mexico, as a member of Professor Rafael Fierro's research group MARHES (Multi-Agent, Robotics, Hybrid, and Embedded Systems Laboratory). Her research is mainly oriented in the field of modeling and control of unmanned aerial vehicles. The tools utilized in her Ph.D thesis are: modeling of nonlinear systems, nonlinear control design, Lyapunov stability, adaptive control, bifurcation theory, optimal control,

reinforcement learning, optimization theory. She defended her Ph.D dissertation in August 2012 entitled Agile load transportation systems using aerial robots.
Mr. Patricio Cruz is a research assistant in the MARHES Lab in the University of New Mexico (UNM). He is also currently enrolled as a Ph.D. student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at UNM. In 2005, he received the B.S. degree in Electronics and Control Engineering from Escuela Politécnica Nacional, Quito-Ecuador. His B.S. thesis focused on the implementation of an articulated robot that mimics the movements of a worm. He worked as design engineer in Autotrack, an Ecuadorian company developing intelligent transportation system solutions, and then as electrical maintenance technician in the "El Comercio" newspaper plant. This newspaper is the second most important in Ecuador, his native country. In 2007, he started teaching undergraduate courses and labs at the College of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Escuela Politécnica Nacional. In 2010, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in the Fulbright Faculty Development Program. He obtained a M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from UNM in 2012. The main objective of his M.Sc. thesis was the design and implementation of a real-time control architecture for a multi-vehicle aerial test bed based on the AscTec Hummingbird quadrotors. His research interests include heterogeneous robotic systems, rotor-craft unmanned vehicles, hybrid systems, optimal and adaptive control, cooperative control, and multi-agent coordination.
Dr. Rafael Fierro is an associate professor of the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of New Mexico where he has been since 2007. He received a M.Sc. degree in control engineering from the University of Bradford, England and a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas-Arlington. Prior to joining UNM, he held a postdoctoral appointment with the GRASP Lab at the University of Pennsylvania (1999-2001) and a faculty position with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Oklahoma State University (2001-2007). His research interests include nonlinear and adaptive control, robotics, hybrid systems, autonomous vehicles and multi-agent systems. He directs the Multi-Agent, Robotics, Hybrid and Embedded Systems (MARHES) Laboratory. Rafael Fierro was the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship, a 2004 National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and the 2007 International Society of Automation (ISA) Transactions Best Paper Award. He is serving as associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering. Dr. Fierro is a senior member of the IEEE.
