Rare earth (RE) activated nanosized oxide phosphors are of interest because of their drastic improvement in luminescence output and radiation stability, which ultimately result in the introduction of display phosphor. For effective coating and optimum brightness, phosphors should be fine particle size with narrow particle size distribution and homogeneously doped activator. Doping of rare earth activators in a proper host by conventional method involves heating the powders at high temperature ( 1200 °C) with repeated grinding. In recent years flurry of activity is directed towards the low temperature synthesis of phosphors to overcome the synthetic difficulties and improve the luminescent properties. Therefore, there is a need for an alternative approach for the preparation of display phosphors, which not only fulfills the requirements of phosphors but should also be facile. Numerous reports dealing with synthesis technique and optical properties of RE doped nanoparticles.
