Torquato Tasso's epic poem La Gerusalemme liberata with its 20 cantos has been widely translated into almost all European languages. At the beginning of this long series stands the Solymeis of Scipio Gentilis, followed by four more (partial) Latin translations over the next one hundred years. Since the 17th century can be seen as the general heyday of Latin translations, a study of the literary strategies of Latinization has an exemplary character that goes beyond the works examined in this volume.The historical contextualization of the individual translations reveals, inter alia, courtly and confessional ties, which are reflected in the texts themselves, such as Scipio Gentilis' Protestant background or the connection of Johannes Baptista Valentianus to the House of Savoy and its crusading ambitions.
