In 1952, Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark discovered that titanium bonded well with bone; a phenomenon which was later termed as osseointegration. In 1965, Dr. Branemark and his colleagues started clinical trials with titanium dental implants with great success. The word osseointegration consists of "os" the Latin word for bone and "integration" derived from the Latin words meaning the state of being combined into a complete whole.Osseointegration is defined as "a direct structural and functional connection between ordered, living bone and the surface of a load-carrying implant." This book contains thorough information regarding bone, its morphology and physiology; history, mechanism of action, bio mechanism, factors affecting osseointegration; effect of different types of implants and their materials on osseointegration and recent advances regarding it.
