There is hardly a page that does not contain a traditional or manipulated proverbial phrase in the lively dialogues or skillfully crafted prose.This book begins with an introductory essay that demonstrates the importance of proverbial language in Dickens' complete works. The bulk of the volume is a key-word index to the occurrence of proverbs in his writings, with the proverbs arranged according to the most significant word in the text. Each entry also provides references to major proverb dictionaries, which readers may consult to learn more about the history of a particular proverbial statement. The interpretative essay together with the index show that Charles Dickens employed proverbial speech effectively to add folk wisdom and linguistic realism to his colorful prose.

The Authors: George B. Bryan was Professor of Theatre at the University of Vermont and published several reference books on theatrical biography, among them Stage Deaths: A Biographical Guide to International Theatrical Obituaries, 1850-1990, and Ethel Merman: A Bio-Bibliography. In addition to American Theatrical Legislation, 1607-1900: Conspectus and Texts, Dr. Bryan also wrote Black Sheep, Red Herrings, and Blue Murder: The Proverbial Agatha Christie (Peter Lang, 1993).Wolfgang Mieder is Professor of German and Folklore at the University of Vermont. In addition to editing Proverbium: Yearbook of International Proverb Scholarship, Dr. Mieder has written such books as American Proverbs: A Study of Texts and Contexts (Peter Lang, 1989); A Dictionary of American Proverbs (with S. Kingsbury and K. Harder); Proverbs Are Never Out of Season: Popular Wisdom in the Modern Age; and Weather Wisdom: Proverbs, Superstitions, and Signs (with S. and M. Kingsbury; Peter Lang, 1996).
Dr. Bryan and Dr. Mieder are co-authors of The Proverbial Bernard Shaw; The Proverbial Winston S. Churchill; The Proverbial Eugene O'Neill; Proverbs in World Literature: A Bibliography (Peter Lang, 1996); and The Proverbial Harry S. Truman (Peter Lang, 1997).
