A highly innovative approach for thermo-mechanical processing in metal-forming technology enables the production of steel products with full three-dimensional geometry and, at the same time, tailored mechanical properties. The application of locally and temporally differential thermo-mechanical ef-fects to initial homogeneous workpiece materials combines thermally-controlled material flow with functional grading of mechanical properties, which result directly from the process-integrated thermo-mechanical control of local microstructural evolution. Temperature and micro hardness mea-surements are used, in order to investigate the effects of different heating and cooling strategies. By an appropriate choice of process parameters and resulting thermo-mechanical conditions, defined functionally-graded proto-type parts could be realized.Based on the results of the parameter studies, the research focus lies on the development, installation and testing a fully integrated experimental set-up. This should not only allow to extend the parameter studies regarding to the locally and temporally differential thermo-mechanical design but also to ad-vance the conceptual design of specific systems engineering in hardware and software. In this context, process control strategies should be developed for selected functional reference gradations of the demonstrator "flanged shaft". Those reference gradations orient on the extension of the thermo-mechanically induced geometrical and microstructural freedom of design.
