There is no doubt Poe has written terrific tales of horror. The Raven stands among his most famous. Yet many readers have complained that these tales are written in an old time language that is hard to comprehend today.
An example: There is something in the unselfish and self-sacrificing love of a brute, which goes directly to the heart of him who has had frequent occasion to test the paltry friendship and gossamer fidelity of mere Man.
Knight is well known for retelling Grimm's Fairy Tales and this short book brings that same kind of retelling. Readers have raved at how much eassier the stories are to read and thus more enjoyable.
The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart and The Black Cat are stories that stand among his greatest and should be read by anyone who enjoys horror.
Most of the stories, including the scary ones, are basically fantasy tales. YOu need to have an open mind when you read them. :-)
That's one of the reasons I enjoy writing for the younger audience. I really think it's also why many adults are reading these types of books. To escape reality.
