This is a story of three generations of Bengalee women spanning the 1930s to the 1980s-in times of political uprisings and civil conflicts, turmoil and joy. The colors and contours, rituals and challenges captured in the book portray their extraordinary journey. Sanu mourns her immense solitude in a loveless marriage to an old man. Sabaa is the first woman from her village who flies in an aeroplane to a foreign land to create a future. Her three daughters-Tara, Zahra and Anushka-in their tightly balled up fists hold dreams that pale in the light of the day. They fall in love, encounter heartbreaks, and wrestle with destiny. But their indomitable spirits remain unscathed; they craft their own amazing stories . . . to feel they are really living.
She authored and co-authored numerous entertainment-education materials and directed animation films on social issues honing the power of story telling to influence behavior. Her work with the United Nations took her to the heart of unchartered territories marred with armed conflict in Asia and Africa-from the war torn landscape of Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal to the shores of Angola, Cote d'Ivoire¿.¿.¿.¿the slopes of Rwanda, Uganda and Mozambique that borne the scars of civil conflicts. She travelled extensively to many other regions that offered her the opportunity to work closely with the most marginalized grass roots communities. In one of her international assignments, she was based in a remote island for several years in the south Pacific where the idea of this book was born.
Shahzadi holds two post graduate degrees: a Masters in Public Health, and an MA in English literature. At present she lives in greater Washington DC area in the US.
