Talks that will enable you to "hear" Andrew Murray preach
(Approximately 19,000 words or 60 book pages)
If you count Andrew Murray as one of your heroes of the faith, or have read some of his published works, then these three talks are sure to find a special place in your heart. They were delivered on consecutive evenings at the Keswick Convention of 1895 in the Lake District, England.
But unlike the other sermons Andrew Murray delivered while on tour that year, he did not revise these for publication, nor incorporate them as separate chapters in one of his books. They are therefore unique to Keswick, and differ in content from other sermons published under the same titles. They are also basically word for word as he delivered them.
You will also find that unlike other ministers of his day, who were inclined to read their sermons, he favored using short headings that allowed him to preach in an extempore manner. His aim was for his hearers to receive the Word "as a HAMMER that breaks and opens up; as a FIRE that melts and refines; and as a SWORD that slays the flesh."
So if you have ever desired to hear Andrew Murray preach, these Keswick talks will enable you, with the help of the Holy Spirit and a little imagination, to do just that.
Included in this book is also his testimony that he gave at a special afternoon session at the same Convention.
Andrew was born in Graaff-Reinet on the Eastern Frontier of the Cape on 9 May 1828. His father, Rev. Andrew Murray Sr., had come to the Cape from Scotland in 1822 with a group of Scottish ministers to help fill the many pastoral vacancies in the Dutch Reformed Church at the time.
Andrew Murray's legacy
He was elected as moderator of the Cape Synod six times: 1862, 1876, 1883, 1886, 1890 and 1894.
He was awarded two honorary doctorates: one in Divinity from Aberdeen University in 1898, and one in Literature from Cape Town University in 1907.
He was a fiery, spirit-filled preacher who went on several evangelical tours throughout South Africa. In 1895, he was invited to preach at several conventions in England, the Netherlands, and the USA over a period of six months.
During his lifetime, he wrote 250 books and tracts, with some of his major works being translated into fifteen languages.
He was also a great missionary statesman who established a Missions Institute in his pastorate of Wellington in 1877. It proved a huge success, resulting in its graduates establishing mission stations in Bechuanaland (Botswana), Mashonaland (Zimbabwe), Nyasaland (Malawi), Northern Rhodesia (Zambia), and the Sudan.
As already mentioned, he became the president of the executive committee of the Cape General Mission that was founded in 1889. During its early years, he did much to establish it on a firm footing through preaching tours and conferences.
Besides championing the practical side of missions, he was also interested in the theoretical side, especially the lack of motivation within the world-wide church to promote Christ's Great Commission. In 1901, he wrote The Key to the Missionary Problem, and in 1910 The State of the Church.
Above all, he was known for his humility, and for being a man of God who lived what he preached.
