Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Public International Law and Human Rights, grade: 55, University of Sussex, course: Globalisation, Liberalism and Modernity, language: English, abstract: The paper seeks to conceptualise the significance of human rights to democracy and in so doing outlines the nexus between human rights and democracy. Human rights are inalienable basic rights inherent to an individual by virtue of them being human regardless of race, sex, religion, language, nationality or any other status. Democracy is a multifaceted concept with a plethora of definitions even though there is no consensus to what constitutes a democracy, the major sticking point being whether democracy is about majoritarianism or whether it should extend to the upholding of the basic human rights tenets such as freedom of expression, free and fair elections and inclusive suffrage.
