Reflective of Hornung's adept control of narrative and atmosphere, the book is an anthology of tales, including 'A Nucleus of Fortune' and 'The Admirable Miles,' among others. Each story is deftly crafted, blending intrigue with Hornung's characteristic wit, while encapsulating the societal ethos of the turn-of-the-century period. His literary style is distinctly Edwardian, rife with the class-consciousness and the charm that define many novels of that era, appealing to readers who revel in the nostalgia of bygone days and the intricacy of human encounters tinged with the excitement of the unknown. Autoren-Porträt von E. W. Hornung
Ernest William Hornung, known as E.W. Hornung (1866-1921), was an English author and poet, best known for his series of novels featuring the character A.J. Raffles, a gentleman thief in late Victorian England. Born in Middlesbrough, England, Hornung was the third son of Hungarian parents, and the brother-in-law of famed author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Though his literary career began with a focus on poetry and serial stories, he achieved considerable success with his Raffles series, beginning with 'The Amateur Cracksman' in 1899. Hornung's character of Raffles can be seen as a shady counterpoint to Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, with whom he shared the Victorian moral complexities that enthralled audiences of the time. In addition to his Raffles stories, Hornung wrote numerous novels, including 'At Large' which stands out in its narrative style and character development. His work often showcases a dichotomy between the charm of his characters and the societal laws they flout, exploring the human condition and the blurred lines between right and wrong. Through his elegant prose, Hornung's contributions have left a lasting impact on the literary world, with his works being an insightful reflection of the societal norms and cultural milieu of his era.
