The recent deaths of people close to him have left Dalton at his lowest ebb. Afoot and with only a few dollars to his name he takes refuge in Abner Whitlock's trading post.
When a riverboat captain gets into a fight with Abner, Dalton intervenes, but in the ensuing scuffle Abner and Captain Chattoway end up dead. Dalton gets a chance to make amends for his actions when he's given the task of completing the captain's seemingly routine mission to deliver whiskey to the Ruby Lady saloon.
