At the age of twelve, Marguerite Black one day inexplicably loses her balance while riding her bike, and slowly what has previously been a dimly perceived threat becomes a reality. This is an account of her struggle to come to terms with Friedreich's ataxia, a crippling neurological disorder which her brother also suffers from. Her description of an unfettered early childhood in Grahamstown forms a sharp contrast with the increasing sense of despair when she realises that she is losing her ability to move normally. However, at the same time she is quietly determined to retain as much independence as she can, and she grows in many other ways. While fighting the disease remains a daily battle, in the end Marguerite's journey teaches her to 'dance in her own way'.
