Women in Jesus time had little legal protection, can a man divorce his wife for any reason. They could be divorced simply for displeasing their husbands. Jesus teaching here is that divorce is contrary to the will of God and his intentions is that marriage last a lifetime. Jesus acknowledged that in the case of adultery, divorce may be a sad necessity when one partner refuses to stop his or her unfaithfulness. This not the Bibles' last word on divorce, however; does God permit divorce? Paul later suggested another possible scenario for divorce: when a believer is deserted by an unbelieving spouse (1 Cor. 7:15).
