The story leans heavily upon the drinking and smoking that became a partner in all the activity, whether it was school or after-school events. And clearly the events are intended, as they were then, to bring some laughter. There is an undertone, though, of the early days and signs of someone who is becoming an addict and alcoholic.
There is an update summary of the lives and situations as they are today that sometimes reflects sarcasm, but a sense of happiness and spiritual contentedness as well.
