Yakov Gordin was born in Leningrad, December 23, 1935.
Mother - Marianne Basin - Russian literature historian and author of books for young people on Pushkin, Dostoevsky, Nekrasov.
Father - Arkady Gordin - Pushkin scholar. After 1956, he became Deputy Director for Science of the All-Union Pushkin Museum.
After graduating from high school in 1954 and has been satiated with the process of education, he went to the draft board and asked to hurry to take him to the army. Not least, this was due to rapt reading of Jack London and the idea of self-examination.
When he returned to Leningrad in 1957, he entered the Leningrad University Faculty of Philology. Then he began to write poetry.
At the end of the second year has passed in absentia, and, after graduating from courses technicians geophysicist at the Institute of Arctic Geology, worked for five years in geological expeditions of this institution - Northern Yakutia, Anabarsky crystalline array ,Verkhoyansk Range.
Out of the University from the fourth year. Since the mid-sixties began to be published as a critic in the Novyi Mir, Zvezda, the Voprosy Literatury.
Then began to engage in historical research. Since 1967, the plays Gordin started doing productions in theaters.
In 1972 he published a book of poems, The Space and in 1974, at the Zvezda published a paper about the last years of Pushkin's life. And from that hour the historical journalism became his main occupation.
In the late 1980's - early 1990 took an active part in the political life of the Leningrad-Petersburg - was a member of the board DVR and the SPS.
Since the early 1990s, along with Andrew Aryan publishes the magazine Zvezda.
