This book, which offers the first feminist reading of the "carpe diem" theme in Fernando de Rojas' masterpiece, reveals a positive and liberating portrayal of female characters. The application of certain contemporary French feminist theories such as those of Helene Cixous and Luce Irigaray, elucidates Rojas' "deconstruction" process, which breaks with patriarchal attitudes towards women.
"This new, provocative feminist approach to La Celestina is sure to elicit passionate reactions. Whether or not you agree with Hartunian's premise, you will enjoy this lively, unconventional book. Diane Hartunian makes us rethink our notions on La Celestina." -Barbara Mujica, Georgetown University.
The classical literary thème known as carpe diem or seize thé day, is one of gréât popularity both in classical and Renaissance literature. The carpe diem thème stresses thé enjoyment of présent pleasures in fear of thé brevity of life and thé finality of death: "Be wise, decant thé wine, prune back your long-term hopes. Life ebbs as I speak: so seize each day, and grant thé next no crédit."
! Most frequently found in Spanish Golden Age lyric poetry, thé carpe diem thème is also an essential literary thème of Golden Age prose. Among numerous works in Golden Age prose containing thé carpe diem thème is Celestina, (Fernando de Rojas, 1499), a novel of particular interest for its structural, stylistic, and ideological dependence on this literary thème.
The purpose of this monograph is to examine thé functions of thé carpe diem thème in Celestina. In thé course of my study, I show how thé carpe diem thème reveals itself as thé prime mover of virtually ail aspects of thé novel including characterization and plot development, stylistic aspects, and its ideological intentions.
Although attention has been given to thé présence of thé carpe diem thème in Spanish poetry, only scant références hâve been made to this thème in thé prose of thé Golden Age. Critical studies tend to treat only superficially this thème, which has been described as "one of thé greatest traditional commonplaces of European literature."
Even though récognition has been given with respect to thé importance of this thème in European literature, critics hâve largely overlooked its depth and impact on Spanish literature, and in particular to Celestina. To my knowledge, no critical analysis exists which examines exclusively thé carpe diem thème either in Spanish prose or in Celestina, a literary masterpiece considered second in importance only to Cervantes` Don Quixote.
Chapter one offers an explanation of thé carpe diem concept and thé évolution of
Chapter two studies character portrayal as related to thé carpe diem thème, which as we shall see, is thé unifying force of both plot and character development, as it is expressed either directly or indirectly by almost ail of thé characters. I also show how thé carpe diem acts as a catalyst in permitting thé protagonist Celestina to persuade and convince others to follow her call to enjoyment.
It is precisely by means of thé carpe diem thème that each character achieves certain goals such as thé amorous union of Calisto and Melibea, thé erotic encounter of Pârmeno and Areûsa, thé monetary desires of Celestina, and thé material pursuits of thé servants Sempronio and Pârmeno. Seizing thé day transforms an inactive state, i.e., Calisto`s initial désire for Melibea into an active realization.
The third chapter, titled Stylistic Aspects, focuses on thé various stylistic devices that Rojas employs to communicate thé carpe diem thème.
