Moby Dick; or, the Whale by Herman Melville
------
Written by American writer Herman Melville, the novel "Moby Dick; or, the Whale" was published in 1851 during the period of the American Renaissance. A Sailor named ishmael tells us the story of Ahab, captain of the whaler Pequod, who goes on an obsessive quest for revenge on Moby Dick. On an earlier voyage, the whale destroyed Ahab's ship and severed his leg at the knee. Although the novel was a commercial failure and out of print at the time of the author's death in 1891, its reputation as a Great American Novel was established during the 20th century.
