As economic, technological and cultural change gathers pace across the world, issues of musical heritage and sustainability have become ever more pressing and urgent. Discourse on intangible cultural heritage has blossomed due to growing concern about the loss of traditions and the threats posed to cultural identity by the forces of globalization. This volumes makes a significant contribution to understandings of music heritage drawing on aesthetic, historical and ethnographic methodologies and perspectives. It examines and evaluates the cultural politics and ethics of safeguarding and the audio-visual representation of music heritage; the policies and methods of music safeguarding, transmission and sustainability; the movement of musics across national borders, and issues of revival, change and innovation.
Naomi Matsumoto is currently Lecturer in Music at Goldsmiths, University of London and is working on Italian opera of the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. She has received several awards, including the British Federation of Women Graduate National Award, the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation British Award, the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation Award, and the JSPS Symposium Award.
