Advances in genomics and bioinformatics have revolutionized our understanding of structural and functional aspects of plant genomes and have made it possible to extrapolate our understanding from model plants to cultivated crops. Complete genome sequences and a number of expressed sequences have become available which when coupled with traditional breeding methodologies will facilitate the crop improvement.
