Autoren-Porträt von E. W. Hornung
Ernest William Hornung, commonly known as E. W. Hornung, was an English author, most famously known for his creation of the gentleman thief A.J. Raffles, a character who first appeared in the story collection 'The Amateur Cracksman' in 1899. Hornung was born on June 7, 1866, in Middlesbrough, England, and educated at Uppingham School. He tried his hand at several careers before turning to writing. Hornung spent time in Australia, which influenced some of his books, such as 'A Bride from the Bush' (1890). His experiences there added a level of richness to his descriptions of the Australian landscape in his writings. In 'The Camera Fiend' (1911), Hornung diverges from his more familiar tales of crime to explore themes of obsession and the psychological implications of technology, a remarkably prescient subject for the time. While not as well-known as his Raffles series, 'The Camera Fiend' showcases Hornung's versatility and his ability to delve into the complexities of human nature. Throughout his storied career, Hornung's writing was characterized by a concise, elegant style and a knack for suspenseful storytelling. Hornung's contribution to the crime genre has been widely acknowledged. His work preceded and perhaps influenced other great mystery writers, including his brother-in-law, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Hornung passed away on March 22, 1921, but his literary legacy continues to captivate readers with its combination of intrigue, adventure, and psychological depth.
