Born in 1853, George Laurence Gomme graduated from the City of London School, but did not go on to a university. Instead, he gained employment at London County and its predecessor, holding various positions until his death in 1916. His accomplishments include becoming a Fellow of the Anthropological Institute and being knighted in 1911 for writing books on the history and institutions of London.His contributions to the study of folklore include not only Handbook of Folklore, but also Folklore as an Historical Science, also available in eBook format.
