The story of a girl as she grows up, finding fame and fortune along the way.
The Life and Times of Jodi Worren is structures so that we start with the lanky kid named Judy befriended by a high school coach, Harry Dawson, and then follow the arc of her story and Harry's.
Judy graduates high school and goes to New York. Following the advice of Pops, who is a semi-retired agent for models, and a customer in the store where she works, she gets her hair styled and tips on makeup. Against the advice of her friend and coworker, Connie, she falls victim to a man who wants to exploit her. When Connie uses her underworld connection to extricate her, Judy goes to Pops and using the name Jodi becomes a world famous models. She gets noticed by Sharin Mersor, the grand dame of Hollywood, who wants Jodi to play Sharin in a movie about her life.
While Jodi's life is one of rampant success, Harry and his family are living in Smalsville. A place, the joke goes, which is too small to have four L's on the sign with its name. The arc of Harry's story takes him from coaching basketball to marriage and then running his wife's family hardware store. Their lives are the unglamorous lives of working class people. He has a daughter Dayna and a sick child who dies of Leukemia. On one of their many visits to the hospital Dayna finds a magazine with a picture of Jodi. Harry sees the picture but has no idea that this is the same Judy he befriended years ago.
When her husband dies leaving her all his wealth in addition to her fame, Jodi feels she needs to seek the advice of someone who cared for her when she had nothing-no beauty, no fame and no wealth.
She has the head of corporate security find Harry.
Jodi goes to Smalsville to find Harry so he can help her regain her balance. But she cannot totally run away from the world she must learn to deal with.
