The Toungoo Empire was the dominant power in mainland South-East Asia during the sixteenth century. This novel is a creative retelling of its rise from the kingdom of Toungoo in the mountains of Central Burma to the empire carved out by successive kings, King Mingyi Nyo, King Tabinshwehti and King Bayinnaung and its fall under King Nanda Bayin.
It is a story of religion, ambition, greed, deaths in their millions, loyalty and personal feuds set against a backdrop of the arrival of the Europeans in the region and the birth of the "Gunpowder Kings." Based on the chronicles of the day the book brings to life the events, motivations and mindset of the period in a narrative nonfiction format.
