Yogi Vithaldas (1911-1989) was one of the first Indian yoga masters who went to the West to specifically teach the practice of yoga, including Hatha Yoga. He went to Berlin in the 1930s and demonstrated several Hatha Yoga exercises such as asanas, pranayama, mudras and kriyas. An article published in a 1953 edition of Life magazine named Yogi Vithaldas as a teacher of violin virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin, long before B.K.S. Iyengar became Menuhin's yoga teacher. Yogi Vithaldas believed the ultimate goal of yoga is "not to teach Western society the Indian Rope Trick or other abnormal practices...but to teach him how to unfold his dormant powers, in the physical, mental and spiritual sense, to their full extent." Yogi Vithaldas described these forces as the key energy which can be awakened through the practice of Hatha Yoga.
