Benjamin Britten ist der meistaufgeführte britische Komponist des 20. und jungen 21. Jahrhunderts. Der vor hundert Jahren in der englischen Grafschaft Suffolk geborene Britten steht im Bereich des Sinfonischen und der Konzertform neben anderen großen englischen Protagonisten wie Walton, Elgar und Delius, nimmt jedoch im Bereich der Oper eine überragende Ausnahmestellung ein und ist zu den bedeutendsten Komponisten von Bühnenwerken im 20. Jahrhundert zu zählen. Seine erste Oper "Peter Grimes" war ein Sensationserfolg und markierte den internationalen Durchbruch des Musikers. Die vorliegende Londoner Aufnahme von 1958 unter der Leitung des Komponisten gilt als Referenzaufnahme und als Meilenstein in der Schallplattengeschichte.
