West Africa's patterns of migration in pre-colonial and early post-colonial times were predominantly internal and regional; from landlocked Sahelian countries to relatively prosperous mines, plantations and coastal cities. This was very significant in ensuring quality brain and skills circulation in the region. Out-migration to Europe, despite the numerous benefits that come along with it, remains a huge problem for the region and very worrisome to policy makers. As the previous significant brain and skills circulation that existed in the region has shifted to Europe, it paralysed its human and socioeconomic development efforts. On the other hand it is a huge and an unbearable burden on the social welfare system and job market of Europe.Considering the problematic and worrisome nature of unskilled, semi-skilled and professional youth migration, this study is set to search for its determinants. The findings are intended for a better and more informed policy formulation. Assuming that at the beginning of the 21st Century, West Africa's migratory trends to Europe have changed from predominantly regular to alarmingly irregular and clandestine, this research also investigates the motivations behind this trend. The focus of this study is the migration flow from West Africa to Europe, using Ghana as a case study.

3.1 Research design:
Since the objective of this study is to "connect the dots" and to answer questions related to "why" and "how" of migration from West Africa to Europe, this research employs an explanatory research methodology. This method is suitable for providing an explanation to international migration (Bhattacherjee, 2012 p. 6). However, at some point in the research and analysis, based on necessity, some amount of exploratory and or descriptive research methods are used.
Most of the major data and information that are reviewed are available and extracted from the internet. In conducting this study, the researcher carried out a desk review of relevant and existing migration research data and documents found on official websites and databases, both in Ghana, West Africa, and Europe and at global level.
As an intense literature search, desk review gives the researcher the opportunity to review and synthesis most of the accessible and relevant international documents and data sets. Which allows him to be acquaint with relevant and up-to-date policy issues on international migration both at country, regional and international levels. It also helps the researcher not only to identify gaps and locally relevant research questions but to understand the existing literature on the topic (Operario, 2008).
As a purely desk review, the study will to a limited extent use quantitative and qualitative methods purposed to review documents and records for numeric information and themes in order to generate figures and tables for better presentation and explanation of findings (R. A. Singleton, Jr., and B.C. Straits, 1999).
3.2 Sources of Data:
The most important part of any research is the availability and accessibility of relevant, quality and up-to-date data on the research problem. As a developing nation there exists a serious dearth of reliable and up-to-date date in Ghana when comes to international migration. Notwithstanding,

this research reviews data from in-country databases such as Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), Population and Housing Census reports, Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Ministry of Foreign Affairs and so on.
It makes use of independent migration research databases such as the longitudinal research data of MAFE (Migration between Africa and Europe) project, conducted between 2008 and 2009 on Europe and Africa, Eurostat and the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) in their 2000 study of push and pull factors determining international migration flows.
Added to this, the research also source data from databases of regional and international institutions such as, ECOWAS, African Union, UNDP, World Bank, Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the European Union. Reliable documents on international migration and migration in general such as books, academic journals and so on of cause provide the necessary background information as well as provide the right framework for the topic under discussion.
Chapter 4: Socio-Economic Context of Ghana:
4.1 Introduction:
It has been proven that socio-economic condition of a country is critical in shaping people perception about other places and in influencing their aspiration/decision to migrate. Thus, this chapter discusses the general development conditions in Ghana as deemed relevant to the understanding of the motives of youth out-migration over the years. It presents conditions such as the macroeconomic environment, demographic changes, human capital development, welfare and protection system for families and labour market. Since the research is purely a desk review, this chapter is intended to set the scene for the succeeding parts and analysis. It would help the researcher and the readers to corroborate the findings by measuring them against factors prevalent in Ghana s general development environment.
