Dashiell Hammett, born in 1894, is the author of five hardboiled crime novels, including The Maltese Falcon and The Thin Man. He had spells as a newsboy and stevedore before joining the Pinkerton Detective Agency, which laid the foundation for his writing career. He died in1961.
