He successively served as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Soviet Union and Russia to Spain, Russian Foreign Minister, and Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation. Currently, he is the President of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC).
